Wow! A Virginia transgender woman is marked the 27th trans person murdered in 2016 after being misgendered in news reports.

India Monroe (29) was shot dead last month (December 2016) along with Mark Gray (37) in a home in Newport News, Virginia. Monroe was misgendered in news reports as a male. She was also buried under her birth name and was buried as a male – which was seen as intentionally shady.

Monroe’s death was ruled a homicide but is being investigated as a domestic incident instead of a hate crime. Last year’s record of reported trans murders rose pass the 2015 murder total of 21. There are trans murders that have been unreported to new stations, which makes the current total of reported murders inaccurate because the number is more than likely to be higher. There’s already two trans deaths reported into the year 2017.
